We Affirm: The Story of America is the History of Newcomers to its Shores.
Arlington, VA (July 3, 2025) – As we look forward to celebrating Independence Day with family and friends, ECDC calls for a more complete and honest reflection of what it means to be an American.
As the country celebrates 250 years of independence, let us also acknowledge the millions of immigrants and refugees who have contributed to building this nation. These communities have contributed to America’s growth, resilience, and spirit; however, they have sometimes been excluded from the rights and recognition promised to others.
“At ECDC, we work every day with individuals and families who have made this country their home,” said founder and president Tsehaye Teferra, Ph.D. “They are business owners, caregivers, educators, essential workers, parents, and community leaders. Their stories are part of America’s fabric. Their hopes are rooted in its future.”
Members of the communities we serve tell us: “We have contributed to every sector of American life, sometimes while facing discrimination or barriers to inclusion. This Independence Day, we remind the nation that we are still here, and we still believe in the promise of this country.”
This July 4 allows us to affirm the dignity and belonging of immigrant and refugee communities. Many of the people we serve are facing discrimination, family separation, and uncertainty about their status. Still, they continue to contribute to the communities in which they live with strength and perseverance.
As an organization, we echo their sentiments: We are here. We belong. Together, we grow and prosper.
We invite our partners, neighbors, and elected officials to join us in celebrating this day with a renewed commitment to the values of justice, safety, and opportunity for all people, regardless of their birthplace or immigration status.
We honor this nation not through silence, but through solidarity.
