Standing with Venezuela

Arlington, Va. (June 29) – The devastating earthquakes that struck north-central Venezuela on June 24th have left communities shattered, families broken, and an entire nation grieving. The scale of loss is staggering — and the pain is still unfolding.

“Our hearts are with the people of Venezuela,” said ECDC President and CEO Tsehaye Teferra, PhD.

“As an organization that works daily with people who have survived displacement, crisis, and loss, we understand in a profound way what it means to face devastation and uncertainty. The Venezuelan people are showing extraordinary resilience in the face of unimaginable grief, and they deserve the full support of the global community, “he added.

“We stand with every family searching for a loved one, every first responder working tirelessly through the rubble, and every community facing the long road of rebuilding. We urge our partners, supporters, and the broader community to keep Venezuela in their hearts and in their actions.

So far, the disaster has claimed at least 1,500 lives, injured more than 1,500 people, and left tens of thousands missing. More than 400 buildings have been toppled, trapping untold numbers of people beneath the rubble. The United Nations’ humanitarian coordinator for Venezuela, Gianluca Rampolla Del Tindaro, has said the death toll will keep on growing, adding that a “tropical wave” is expected to arrive over Venezuela and bring heavy rain in the next few hours, which could cause difficulties for those displaced by the quakes.

Relief efforts and how you can help:

The Virginia Task Force 1 (VA-TF1), a 79-person elite search-and-rescue unit, has been deployed to Venezuela alongside additional U.S. medical teams, working together on the ground to save lives in the critical hours following the disaster.

If you wish to support relief efforts on the ground, the following organizations among others are currently mobilizing aid dedicated entirely to the Venezuela earthquake response:
